Thinking of Auditioning?
If you have choral singing experience, the desire to learn, and motivation to contribute to an organization rapidly establishing itself as a leader in the local singing community, you are invited to request an audition with Rideau Chorale, one of Ottawa’s most exciting community choirs.
The choir’s director, Roland Graham, is a passionate and talented instructor, whose boundless energy and tireless dedication to musical excellence fuels a fun-filled and rewarding learning process at weekly rehearsals from September through June.
Rideau Chorale meets the needs of enthusiastic amateur choral singers seeking a challenging and stimulating singing environment in which to learn and grow as ensemble musicians.
Regular rehearsals take place once a week at Southminster United Church, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. Depending on the nature of the work, added sectionals may be scheduled at other times, usually on weekends.
Regular attendance is expected of all members throughout the session. The choir provides members with helpful home-study material for extra support learning and nailing down parts.
Occasional weekend workshops, and an optional three-day fall retreat at the CAMMAC Music Centre in the Laurentians, offer members additional opportunities to immerse themselves in the music the choir is presenting, along with team-building and the development of core musical skills.
Auditions normally take place once or twice a year. The ability to ready music and a background in choral experience are definite assets. In your audition, you'll be led through a few vocal exercises to assess your range (soprano or alto, for example), and asked to sing a familiar song, such as O Canada! to gauge your level of experience and ability. Auditions are normally conducted by the choir director, and may include an accompanist and/or a member of the choir's executive board.
Rideau Chorale’s performances are well-marketed and well-produced, resulting in high-quality, favorably-received public presentations that create lasting memories for all involved. The choir is a registered charity governed by a volunteer board of directors whose strong stewardship of the organization has seen the ensemble grow in under three years from a pick-up choir of non-auditioned enthusiasts to a robust chorus that has tackled such works as Duruflé's Requiem, Handel's Messiah, Orff's Carmina Burana and Vivaldi's Gloria among other works.
